Welder / Fabricator

Location: Whangārei, Northland
(ANZSCO Skill Level 3)

An experienced Welder/Fabricator is required for a full-time role in a busy fabrication and engineering environment. This position involves reading plans, preparing materials, welding components, assembling fabricated items, and ensuring all finished work meets required quality and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, welding symbols, sketches, and technical specifications.
  • Measure, mark, cut, align, fit, and weld components according to job requirements.
  • Carry out TIG, MIG, Arc, and MMA welding using manual and semi-automatic welding equipment.
  • Select appropriate welding equipment and methods based on materials and specifications.
  • Prepare materials using tools such as powered saws, grinders, callipers, rulers, clamps, and hand tools.
  • Weld components in various positions including vertical, horizontal, and overhead.
  • Repair machinery, pipe components, systems, and fabricated structures where required.
  • Inspect and test welded surfaces and structures to identify faults or defects.
  • Finish products by cleaning, grinding, polishing, filing, and smoothing welds.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in safe working condition.
  • Follow all workplace health and safety procedures and wear required PPE.

Minimum Requirements

  • At least 5 years of proven and documented experience in welding and fabrication.
  • Proven experience using TIG, MIG, Arc, and/or MMA welding techniques.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret technical drawings, plans, blueprints, and welding symbols.
  • Good working knowledge of fabrication tools, welding equipment, and measuring instruments.
  • Knowledge of relevant safety standards and willingness to use protective equipment at all times.
  • Physically fit and able to carry out manual fabrication and welding tasks.
  • Must meet Immigration New Zealand’s English language requirements for the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), with acceptable English evidence provided at the time of application.
  • Must meet Immigration New Zealand’s health and character requirements for the AEWV.
  • All work experience must be supported by verifiable documentation such as reference letters, employment records, or contracts.

Preferred Attributes

  • Relevant welding, fabrication, or engineering qualification.
  • Experience with pipe welding, pipe fabrication, and repair work.
  • Working knowledge of AWS, API, ANSI, or ASME codes and standards.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Position Details

  • Hours: Minimum 30 hours per week, up to 50 hours per week
  • Overtime: Overtime may be available and paid in accordance with employment terms
