Industrial Painter

Experienced Industrial Painters are required for full-time positions undertaking the preparation and protective coating of structural steel, machinery, industrial equipment and fabricated metal components.

This role is suited to experienced industrial painters with strong surface preparation and spray-painting skills. Applicants should have experience working with industrial coating systems, rather than solely residential or commercial decorative painting.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare steel and metal surfaces for industrial coating and painting.
• Clean, degrease, sand, grind and mechanically prepare surfaces.
• Remove rust, scale, existing coatings and surface contaminants.
• Carry out abrasive blasting or assist with blasting preparation where appropriately experienced.
• Apply primers, protective coatings and industrial paint systems.
• Apply coatings using airless and conventional spray equipment, brushes and rollers.
• Mix and prepare paints and coatings according to manufacturer specifications.
• Apply specified coating thicknesses and multiple-coat systems.
• Mask and protect areas prior to coating.
• Inspect surfaces before and after coating application.
• Identify coating defects and undertake appropriate remedial work.
• Maintain spray equipment, hoses, pumps, guns and associated painting equipment.
• Work on structural steel, fabricated components, machinery and industrial equipment.
• Work safely from platforms, scaffolding or elevated work areas where required and appropriately trained.
• Maintain clean and safe work areas.
• Follow all workplace health and safety, environmental and quality procedures.

Minimum Requirements

• At least 3 years of proven and verifiable experience as an Industrial Painter, Protective Coatings Applicator or in a closely related industrial painting role.
• Demonstrated experience applying coatings to steel and metal surfaces.
• Strong experience with industrial spray-painting equipment.
• Experience using airless spray systems is highly advantageous.
• Good understanding of surface preparation before coating application.
• Knowledge of primers, topcoats and protective coating systems.
• Ability to mix and apply coatings according to product specifications.
• Ability to produce a consistent, high-quality finish.
• Comfortable working within industrial, engineering or manufacturing environments.
• Physically fit and capable of undertaking practical and repetitive work.
• Comfortable working outdoors where required.
• Strong commitment to workplace health and safety.
• Relevant industrial painting, blasting or protective coating qualifications are advantageous.

Preferred Experience

Experience in one or more of the following areas will be highly regarded:

• Structural steel painting.
• Heavy engineering and fabrication.
• Machinery and equipment painting.
• Protective and corrosion-resistant coatings.
• Epoxy and polyurethane coating systems.
• Airless spray painting.
• Abrasive blasting and surface preparation.
• Industrial maintenance painting.
• Marine or heavy equipment coatings.
• Working to specified dry film thickness (DFT) requirements.
• Use of coating inspection and measurement equipment.
• Working at heights, where appropriately trained and certified.

Work Experience Evidence

Applicants must provide verifiable evidence of their relevant industrial painting experience.

Evidence may include:

• Employment reference or experience letters.
• Certificates of employment.
• Employment contracts.
• Payslips or payroll records.
• Tax or social security records where available.
• Trade, blasting or coating qualifications/certificates.
• Other reliable documentation confirming employment, duties and length of experience.

Employment evidence should ideally confirm experience with industrial surface preparation, spray painting and protective coating systems, rather than simply stating that the applicant worked as a painter.

Applicants unable to provide sufficient evidence of their claimed experience may not be considered.

Immigration Requirements

• Meet the applicable Immigration New Zealand requirements for the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).
• Meet any applicable Immigration New Zealand English language requirements, with acceptable evidence provided where required.
• Meet Immigration New Zealand's health requirements.

• Provide satisfactory evidence supporting their qualifications, employment history, skills and experience.
• Be able to obtain the appropriate New Zealand work visa before commencing employment.
