Heavy Machinery Diesel Mechanic – Civil & Earthmoving Equipment

An experienced Heavy Machinery Diesel Mechanic is required for a full-time position working on civil construction and earthmoving machinery in New Zealand.

This role is suited to an experienced diesel mechanic with strong diagnostic, servicing and repair skills across heavy off-highway equipment. Applicants should be comfortable working on machinery such as excavators, loaders, bulldozers, graders, rollers, dump trucks and other civil construction equipment.

The position may involve a combination of workshop and field-based work, including attending machinery breakdowns on civil construction sites.

Key Responsibilities

• Service, maintain and repair heavy diesel-powered construction and earthmoving machinery.
• Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronic faults.
• Carry out preventative and scheduled maintenance.
• Repair diesel engines, transmissions, drivetrains, braking and steering systems.
• Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems, pumps, cylinders, hoses and associated components.
• Undertake fault finding using appropriate diagnostic equipment.
• Inspect machinery and identify worn, damaged or unsafe components.
• Complete major and minor mechanical repairs and component replacements.
• Attend machinery breakdowns and undertake field repairs where required.
• Carry out pre-service and post-repair testing.
• Maintain accurate service and repair documentation.
• Ensure machinery is maintained to appropriate operational and safety standards.
• Work independently and as part of an established mechanical team.
• Follow all workplace and site health and safety procedures.

Minimum Requirements

• At least 3 years of proven and verifiable experience working as a Heavy Diesel Mechanic, Heavy Equipment Mechanic or similar.
• Strong experience working specifically with heavy construction, civil or earthmoving machinery.
• Demonstrated diesel engine servicing, diagnostic and repair experience.
• Strong understanding of hydraulic systems and fault finding.
• Experience diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults.
• Ability to undertake repairs independently.
• Ability to read technical manuals, schematics and service information.
• Relevant heavy automotive, diesel mechanic, mechanical engineering or equivalent trade qualification is highly advantageous.
• Physically fit and comfortable working around large machinery and construction environments.
• Strong commitment to workplace health and safety.
• Current driver's licence or ability to obtain the appropriate New Zealand licence.

Machinery Experience

Experience working with a range of the following equipment will be highly regarded:

• Excavators
• Bulldozers
• Wheel loaders
• Motor graders
• Rollers and compactors
• Articulated and rigid dump trucks
• Skid steer loaders
• Telehandlers
• Civil construction plant
• Other heavy off-highway diesel equipment
